1. Collecting Ideas for Interpreting Art

Starting. Take notes on important elements of Diego Rivera's The Grinder(click here to view the painting): subject, colors, shapes, the feelings it evokes, the story you see in it.

2. Looking Up (or Down)

Write a poem or paragraph that imitates the structure of Whitman's poem: A speaker tells where he or she is, how he or she feels, and what he or she does to capture a sense of mystery. Try to set two scenes: one actual place and one inside the speaker's mind.

3. Daily

Write a catalog poem or paragraph that lists images of things in your daily life that are miracles or make you happy to be alive.

4. Drawing the Stars

A lot of constellations are named after Greek gods or animals. Choose a famous constellation - Ursa Major, cancer, Orion - and do some research to find out where its name came from .Then, locate your constellation on a star map and draw a diagram of its principal stars. Finally, draw the person or animal it is named after.
